James Huntington

Leaders like Aaron and James understand that birding Gambell is very serious business. Photo by Bob Dittrick.

James has been leading our Gambell trips since 2002. Having been a mainstay on the Attu birding tours for 14 years (six as a leader), he has considerable experience with the identification challenges of western Alaska and Asia. If you went to Attu (or have “chased” birds just about anywhere in the Lower 48), you’ve probably bumped into James, one of the most recognizable and enduring characters in birding today. In addition to his superb birding skills, James routinely rakes in the praise for his unfailing good nature, sense of humor, and his determination to make sure that everyone “gets the bird.” A worthy exception to our roster of Alaskan guides, when not leading tours and chasing birds, James is delivering the mail in Iowa City, Iowa.

“And James:  A real gem.  I simply cannot say enough good things about how well he treated all of us, how supportive he was, let alone how good a birder he was.  He’s a real keeper!” N.B., Durham, NC
