OUR “A DOLLAR A DAY” PROGRAM – ALASKA CONSERVATION AT WORK

Our “A Dollar a Day” program allows you to make a difference in the future of Alaska’s resources.

The protection of Alaska's natural resources and wild lands continues to be at the forefront of national conservation issues. The same natural features that nurture the phenomenally rich ecosystems that we value intact are coveted by industry for non-renewable resource extraction and development.  As a friend of ours says, “All environmental victories are temporary and all environmental defeats are permanent.”

In 2005, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) which Jimmy Carter signed in the final hours of his presidency.  ANILCA protects over 100 million acres of federal lands in Alaska, including most of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

However, a swath of coastal plain within the Refuge was set aside for research with the proviso that it could be opened by Congress to oil development if determined to be advisable. This area, referred to as the 1002 area, is a particular focus for Alaska and national conservation groups fighting continued efforts to bring oil exploration and development to this pristine wilderness and annual calving ground of the Porcupine Caribou herd.  The Arctic Refuge is a profound example of the kinds of issues threatening Alaska’s – and the planet’s – natural systems; but it’s just one of many.  Current state and federal government administrations are industry-friendly and eager to make destructive inroads – literally and figuratively – into many important ecosystems by weakening laws that protect our air, water, forests, rivers, lakes and oceans from the ravages of irresponsible development.

Wilderness Birding Adventures supports preserving the natural beauty of Alaska in all its splendor. If you do too, when we send your trip invoice, you’ll have the opportunity to support our "Dollar-A-Day for Conservation" program. Your voluntary, tax deductible donation of one dollar for each day of your trip will support the conservation efforts of the following non-profit organizations:

  • The Alaska Bird Observatory

  • The Alaska Conservation Foundation

  • Audubon Alaska.

Your entire donation is forwarded directly to these organizations by Wilderness Birding Adventures.
