LETTER FROM BOB AND LISA Warm greetings! Twenty-nine years ago, we each separately followed our curiosity to Alaska and we’ve never looked back. Lisa came with her degree in anthropology. Bob, who had been a professional naturalist, left a teaching position at Oregon State University to pursue life in Alaska. Not only did we find pipeline boomers hoping to get rich quick, crusty self-reliant homesteaders, and Native Alaskans redefining their cultures in the face of rapid, invasive change, but at the very heart of all these dreamers and dreams – including ours – lay the compelling power of the raw, wild land and all its possibilities. We both sought wilderness adventure and found it in spades. Eventually, we bumped into each other, and Wilderness Birding Adventures (WBA) rose from the merging of our passions. WBA gets us out into our beloved wild places every summer and gives us a way to share these places with others. We both have experienced first hand the power of nature to inspire, to heal, and to bring out the best in each individual. Both of us recognize the value of wilderness to our culture and its necessity to the well being of future generations. It is our hope that by taking people to the wilderness, we generate advocates for its existence in the future. In creating this business, and naming it as we did, we have tried to distinguish ourselves from the more mainstream birding tour companies and tap into those travelers whose curiosity goes beyond just listing birds to experiencing their entire context. We don’t follow an exact itinerary, or wait on you hand and foot. Our goal is to provide the basic infrastructure for you to experience Alaska’s birds, wildlife, and wilderness to the fullest. Consequently, WBA attracts a variety of fascinating, intelligent, active, self-motivated, curious and passionate adventurers. We travel to many of the same places each year, but every trip is unique. One of the biggest variables for us is the people. We’ve been rewarded with friendships and experiences never imagined. Whether you seek a dramatic landscape against which to define yourself under the challenge of self-powered wilderness travel, or a Bristle-thighed Curlew for your life list, we look forward to setting out on your journey with you. Good birding to you, wherever you may wander – Bob Dittrick & Lisa Moorehead
