Gray-headed Chickadee Float / ANWR Rafting Adventure Birding Focused
8 Days – $ 2,950 Sorry - Full/Waitlist
June 14-21
The purpose of this trip is to attempt to see the Gray-headed Chickadee, the most difficult resident North American bird to see. This chickadee lives its entire life in extremely remote and nearly inaccessible areas – areas where Wilderness Birding Adventures likes to go. We are the only birding tour company that has consistently been able to find these rare birds in recent years. We will fly over the Brooks Range, the farthest north mountain range, into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and float down their north slope toward the Arctic Ocean.
Our schedule is early in the season for conducting a raft trip at this latitude. We always encounter ice on the northern rivers even in late summer. And we will surely find it on this trip, which possibly could mean some portaging depending on the conditions we encounter. We will have about 1/4 mile portage from where the plane lands and drops off the gear to the river on the first day of the trip. Anytime we lead trips into the wilderness, we have to be prepared to deal with unexpected challenges. After all, what would a true adventure be without some unknowns? If you are ready for some adventure and a good chance of seeing a very difficult bird, this is the trip for you!
We should see Dall sheep on the mountainsides and have a chance to see grizzly bears, moose and wolves anywhere. Some other birds we should see include Smith’s Longspur, Upland Sandpiper, Golden Eagle, Northern Shrike, and Wandering Tattler.
