BIRDING BRAZIL Dates: TBD WBA guide Aaron Lang has spent two winters in Brazil and will be organizing a birding trip for 2008 or 2009. The trip will focus on three areas deep in the Brazilian interior: Chapada, Alta Floresta and the Pantanal. Here is a likely itinerary: From Sao Paolo, we’ll fly to Cuiaba and travel from there by vans into the Chapada National Park which sits at the western edge of the Brazilian central plateau. The red sandstone canyon lands of the “Chapada dos Guimaraes” support a specialized cerrado vegetation (grass and scrub) which in turn supports unique fauna and flora. As we ascend the plateau, we will wind through interesting rock formations interspersed with patches of gallery forest. After two nights in Chapada, we’ll fly to Alta Floresta and transfer by van to our lodge on the banks of the Rio Cristalino. Alta Floresta will be the centerpiece of the itinerary. We’ll spend a full six days here birding the many trails into the jungle and visiting the forest canopy from the 30 meter and 50 meter towers. If you dare take a break from birding, feel free to swim in the river, sit in the screened viewing treehouse, or lounge in the hammock, serenaded by the voices of the jungle. With over 500 bird species possible and many primates and mammals, we will be busy for what will seem like too brief a stay. We’ll fly back to Cuiaba, transfer again to van, and begin our adventure into the Pantanal. This leg of the trip is essentially a road trip into the Pantanal, staying at lodges and exploring the phenomenally rich diversity of Amazonian rainforest bird and mammal life. The trip ends in Sao Paolo. Don’t miss the chance to visit Brazil with Aaron. We will be scheduling this trip for 2008 or 2009.
