BARROW BIRDING Sorry, full.
Follow the most intrepid avian birders north to Barrow, the farthest north community in the United States. With the 24-hour daylight of early June, the tundra thaws in fast-forward, snow and ice rapidly giving way to an eruption of tundra vegetation, insects and upwelling ocean nutrients just as the birds arrive to set up breeding territories. We will explore the road system to discover shorebirds, waterfowl and passerines concentrated in the emerging habitat. The beaches and coastal lagoons will also be changing daily as the ice retreats. We'll bird these areas for waterfowl (including all four eider species), gulls and seabirds. We'll charter an off-road vehicle for a few hours to get out to Point Barrow to look for other gulls and seabirds as well as polar bears. The possibility of finding rarities and those elusive far-north breeders is very good under the constant daylight and rapidly thawing habitat as we bird the road system and Point Barrow. Note: Meals will be taken at local restaurants and are not included in the trip price.
