ALASKA BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS Birding Focused
WITH PRIBILOFS II EXTENSION

In conjunction with Ornitravel, a reputable European birding tour company, we are offering a wonderful mainland itinerary for seeing Alaska’s breeding birds while touring through nearly every one of Alaska’s dramatic habitats: five mountain ranges (Kenai, Chugach, Talkeetna, Wrangells and Alaska), interior spruce bogs and treeless tundra, rain forest, glacier-draped fjords, the marine habitats of Prince William Sound and the Kenai Fjords, and the outstanding and varied northern habitats of the Nome on the Seward Peninsula, to name a few.  We’ll keep our eyes peeled for rare stray birds, which can show up anywhere in the summer.  Mammals and wildflowers will complement our birding.  Although we’ve tagged this trip Birding-Focused, it’s an all-around natural history excursion, suitable for birders and non-birders alike.

The trip starts in Anchorage.  After a day of birding Anchorage specialties, we’ll head south, birding along the drive through alpine tundra and coastal rainforest to the town of Seward on the shores of Resurrection Bay.  We’ll spend 2 nights in Seward, and a full day on a boat charter into Kenai Fjords National Park, scanning for auklets, murrelets, puffins, and marine mammals. Driving from Seward to Whittier, we’ll board an all-day ferry to cross Prince William Sound, scanning for pelagics and whales, to the town of Valdez (one night). From Valdez, we’ll drive north to the east end of the Denali Highway, spending two nights here and doing some hiking on our layover day. Then we head across the Denali Highway to Denali National Park for two nights, with a full day inside the park. We drive back to Anchorage and then fly to Nome for 3 days/2 nights for some of the best birding Alaska has to offer.  (See the Nome trip page for more detail on this leg of the adventure. The trip ends in Anchorage but offers an optional Pribilofs extension for 3 days in St. Paul, Pribilof Islands.  Please see the Pribilofs trip page to get a general description of this optional extension. The full itinerary is viewable at www.ornitravel.com.
